Reggae came up in the 1960s in Jamaica. This music genre was developed from ska and rocksteady, styles adherent to american rythm and blues, jazz and soul.
Reputedly the term reggae was firstly used in print Do the Reggay by The Maytals in 1968. Many of the reggae musicians profess rastafarianism and therefore its traditions are often futured in the reggae lyrics. The most world-famous musician was Bob Marley /1945-1981/.
In reggae the accent is placed on the offbeat. The most dominant instruments are drums and bass guitar. In the 1980s the synthesizers took over the piano. Also horns, such as saxophone, trumpet or trombone, play an important role in reggae.
Around the 1970s the rastafarianism become stronger. It wasnt only some kind of religious cult any more. It had bigger and bigger influence on public. The lyrics were inspired by it and contained more of its thoughts and beliefs and praise of Jah /God/.
This genre of reggae originated in about the same time as reggae by King Tubby and Lee 'Scratch' Perry. It is basically an instrumental song without vocals. The emphases is placed on the drum and base line.
This music style was developed around the 1980s. The lyrics were less about the rastafarianism and more about the drugs and guns and sexism. More favorite were the deejays than the singers. Deejays were singing and rapping or toasting over the rythm and raw. Subgenres of the dance hall are ragga /raggamuffin/ and reggae fusion. As the first biggest ragga hit we can consider a song Under Mi Sleng Teng from Wayn Smiths. This song was first big Jamaican hit which was created by the computers and synthesizers.
The 1990s brought rasta lyrics also into ragga. The largest share had rastamens from the Bobo shanty. They were interested mostly in nyabinghy drums. Jointing hip hop and raggamuffin was very popular.
Contemporary reggae is characteristic with interconnection with dancehall. Between the most famous interpreters belongs Anthony B,Sizzla a Capleton.
Reggae has spread to many countries across the world. The most popular festival is Sunssplash in Ocho Rios in Jamaica and Sumfest in Montego Bay also in Jamaica. From the Europien ones we can named festival in Cologne, Germany; Rototom Sunsplash, Spain; Soča Reggae Riversplash, Slovenia and Uppsala Reggae Festival, Sweden.
